Choosing the foundations of your next product.

Think about the team, the operating cost, and the work the product needs to do.

Condensed editorial edition · Based on the original Octobytes article by Urey Mutuale
01

Define what the foundations must support

A backend supports the product’s business logic, data, and connected services. Start by identifying the important workloads and integrations, along with the people who will maintain them. A shortlist becomes more useful when it follows concrete requirements.

02

Include the people doing the work

The team’s experience shapes delivery and long-term maintenance. Familiar tools can reduce the amount of learning required, while a new approach may be justified by a specific constraint. Make that trade-off explicit instead of treating popularity as a requirement.

03

Look past the first release

Consider deployment, monitoring, updates, and ongoing operational costs. A fast first prototype and a sustainable production system are different milestones. Make sure the delivery plan includes the work needed between them.

04

Test the uncertain parts

Identify the assumption most likely to change the architecture, then test a small representative slice. Record what the test demonstrates and what remains uncertain. This gives the next decision a stronger basis than an abstract ranking of frameworks.
